Tom Barlow bio for "Call Me Mr. Positive," The Intergalactic Medicine Show, Spring 2007:

According to a New York Times article the author read recently, only about 10% of the cells that comprise Tom are human. The rest are primarily bacteria, fungi, protozoa and archaea, all playing their part in keeping the colony called Tom functioning. They all deserve a share of the credit for this story.

A few years ago, the Tom Colony grew weary of watching writers enjoying lives of lavish luxury while the T.C. continued to slog away as a wage slave, so they decided to cut themselves in on the action.

Equipping themselves with the same set of tools that Shakespeare and Heinlein used to gain immortality (twenty consonants, five vowels and the androgynous Y), the T.C. experimented with the fiction genome by placing these letters in various orders. Eventually these recombinant sequences evolved into stories that have appeared in various magazines such as the Apalachee Review, the Hiss Quarterly, Hobart, and The Duck and Herring Pocket Field Guide. The Tom Colony's first story in IGMS is the culmination of this experimentation. Learn more about the Tom Colony at their web site, http://barlow.tom.googlepages.com/home.
